Fit Zone Slack Setup Checklist
Your step-by-step guide to getting started with our new community space.
1. Join Slack
https://fit-zone-friends.slack.com
You can use Slack in two ways:
The Slack App (recommended for easiest access)
Your Web Browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
Many members choose to use both - for example, the app on your phone and the browser version on your laptop.
2. Create Your Profile
Inside Slack:
Upload a photo (optional but helpful)
Add your name
This helps the group feel more connected.
3. Turn On or Customize Your Notifications
Staying engaged is key to getting the most out of Fit Zone, so I recommend turning notifications on - at least for a few channels.
Here’s how:
On the Mobile App
Tap the photo or three dots in the top right
Tap “Notifications”
Choose:
“All new messages”
Or “Direct messages, mentions & keywords”
Tap “Channel Notifications” to customize specific channels
On Desktop / Browser
Click your name or workspace name (top left)
Select “Preferences”
Click “Notifications”
Choose your global setting (all messages, mentions only, etc.)
Under “Channel Overrides,” choose channels you want to be notified about (Announcements, Coaching Circle, etc.)
Suggested notification settings for Fit Zone:
Announcements: On
Coaching Channel: On
Wins: Optional
Community Chat: Optional
Mindset Monday: Optional but helpful
4. Explore Your Channels
You’ll see a list on the left. Each channel serves a purpose:
master-faq - All key links, onboarding steps, and how-tos
announcements - Updates, calendar changes, important info
coaching-channel - Ask questions anytime; Joan answers on Thursdays
mindset-monday - Weekly prompts and reflections
community-chat - Connect, share recipes, gear, and fun things
wins - Post sweaty selfies and victories
local-events - Info for Seattle-area Fit Zone members
Visit each one so you know what lives where.
5. Say Hello
Pop into #community-chat and introduce yourself.
Share anything you’d like - where you live, what you enjoy, why you joined Fit Zone.
This helps us all get connected.
6. Save or Bookmark Key Links
Make sure you can easily find:
The Zoom class link for live classes
The Class Booking Calendar
The On-Demand Library
Slack FAQs
Do I need to be tech-savvy to use Slack?
Not at all. If you can click a link and send a text, you can use Slack.
Do I need the app?
You don’t have to, but it does make things easier.
You can also use Slack entirely from your browser if you prefer.
Why am I not seeing notifications?
Check both device and Slack settings.
Ensure notifications are allowed on your phone or laptop, then adjust Slack’s notification preferences.
Can anyone join the workspace?
No. Only members of Fit Zone.
Where do I get coaching support?
Post any fitness, form, modification, mobility, or general healthy-living questions in #coaching-channel.
Joan answers every Thursday between 10–6pm PST.
Where do I share wins or sweaty selfies?
Use the #wins channel. This is one of the best ways to stay accountable.
Where will class changes be posted?
All updates will be posted in #announcements.
What if I get lost?
Go to #master-faq - everything you need is pinned there.
You can also message Joan directly if you’re stuck - look for the DM section of Slack.
Do I have to participate in all channels?
No. Use what supports you.
Announcements and Coaching Channel are the only ones I recommend keeping notifications on for.
Is this replacing the Facebook messenger?
Yes. Slack gives us one organized, distraction-free home for everything Fit Zone.
